Democrats overwhelmingly selected former Vice President Kamala Harris as their preferred candidate in a Morning Consult poll released on Friday.
Four months after losing the 2024 election to President Donald Trump, Harris led the competition in the survey in a mock 2028 Democratic primary and the results were not close.
Harris, who has not announced any intention to seek another presidential nomination, led a pack of 19 candidates with the support of 36%.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg came in second with 10% support. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz all tied for third with 5% support.

Other potential candidates who received support in the low single digits included Mark Cuban, Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
It is unclear if Harris intends to run for president in 2028. Some have floated her as a potential 2026 California gubernatorial candidate. Three weeks after the 2024 election, Politico reported on her future:
Kamala Harris has been lying low since her defeat in the presidential race, unwinding with family and senior aides in Hawaii before heading back to the nation’s capital.
But privately, the vice president has been instructing advisers and allies to keep her options open — whether for a possible 2028 presidential run, or even to run for governor in her home state of California in two years. As Harris has repeated in phone calls, “I am staying in the fight.”
She is expected to explore those and other possible paths forward with family members over the winter holiday season, according to five people in the Harris inner circle, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal dynamics.
