CNN conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg ripped Fox News host Harris Faulkner for comparing President Donald Trump’s tariffs to a “war effort.”
“[Oh] ffs. I like Harris Faulkner. But I’ve been writing about the fallacy of ‘moral equivalent of war’ arguments for three decades,” Goldberg, a vocal critic of Trump’s tariffs, posted to X in response to the clip of Faulkner from Outnumbered.
Faulkner addressed Americans concerned about the effect an unsteady market is having on their 401(k)s. She called the markets a “snapshot” and urged people to do a “100% buy-in over this bumpy period.”
Wednesday marks what Trump has repeatedly deemed Liberation Day as he places steep tariffs on imports from multiple countries, as those nations threaten retaliatory efforts.
Faulkner argued:
So part of that deal is to making sure your “shareholders” — the actual people, not by money, but by vote — understand what’s coming. And those 401(k) people who are depending, those retirees, all of that — just talking plain speak with them.
Look, when this nation used to go to war, people in this country would support the war effort with their materials at home and making things for weaponry and all of that. We gotta do 100% buy-in over this bumpy period — just communicate.
Goldberg blasted the “ridiculous” argument and comparison, arguing there is no evidence that a “bumpy period” dealing with pricey tariff battles will lead to personal benefits.
“We are not at war with our allied trading partners. Not even a little. Beyond that, the assumption here is that it is obvious things will dramatically and broadly improve for those 401K owners once we get through ‘the bumpy period.’ Zero evidence for that. Lots of evidence against it,” Goldberg wrote.
He added, “There is no reason to carry water for Trump on this nonsense.”
