2025 marks 50 years since the formation of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. To celebrate the milestone anniversary, an “unrestricted” documentary about the band will be released this year.
The documentary will feature interviews with “pivotal” band members and the final interview with former vocalist Paul Di’Anno, who passed away last year. It will also contain new animation of the band’s longtime mascot, Eddie.
While no title has been announced yet, the band have revealed that the documentary was created in partnership with Universal Pictures Content Group.
British photographer and film director Malcolm Venville (Churchill At War) directed the film alongside producer Dominic Freeman (Spirits In The Forest—A Depeche Mode Film), and the Executive Vice President of Universal Pictures Content Group, and the film’s executive producer, Helen Parker (Bogart: Life Comes In Flashes).
Described as an “emotive journey” through Iron Maiden’s storied history, the documentary will offer perspectives of the band, lifelong fans, and fellow music icons. Special guests set to appear in the film include actor Javier Bardem (F1, Skyfall), Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, and KISS’s Gene Simmons.
In addition to the interviews and new animation of Eddie, the documentary will host archival footage and examine Iron Maiden’s impact on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, plus how they frequently challenged conventional views of rock and metal music.

No release date for the documentary film has been announced, but here’s hoping it plays in cinemas.
In a statement on the band’s website, Iron Maiden’s longtime manager Rod Smallwood said, “We’re proud Universal Pictures Content Group has chosen to share the unique story of Iron Maiden with the world. We have given them unrestricted access to the band, our fans and musical peers.
“We trust that they will excite not only music fans but also anyone who loves a story of an underdog beating the odds to become and remain one of Britain’s biggest musical exports since our first record released 45 years ago.”
Iron Maiden made their long-awaited return to Australia in September.
Reviewing their show at Perth’s RAC Arena, The Music’s Jake Fitzpatrick wrote: “Despite their long career, this is a band that clearly still has it. With a setlist spanning their illustrious career, a production that was nothing short of spectacular, and an electrified crowd, the evening was a testament to why Iron Maiden remains one of the greatest bands in rock history.”
